Quitting

(Available free with and many other themes in the Thinkladder App).

The temptation to quit when times get tough is a common human feeling. However, whether we act on that feeling or not depends a lot on the way we think. If we find ourselves quitting things frequently, we may be dealing with limiting beliefs. These thoughts can undermine our confidence in the face of challenging situations.

Some examples of limiting beliefs that could be feeding our urge to quit could be, ‘If I’m not going to be the best, I might as well quit,’ or ‘I don’t have what it takes to stick with challenges’. When we are able to identify these beliefs, we then give ourselves the power to change them. We do this by countering a negative belief with another, more life-giving idea.

Insights from the ‘Quitting’ Theme

There are times when quitting IS the best option, but I need to ensure that what I am really quitting on is just an experience – and not on myself.
Tenacity matters more than talent.
When I make my expectations reasonable, achievable, and clear, I’m much less likely to quit.
If I am having trouble sticking with things, I need to find a motivation more powerful than my inclination to quit.
Even though it’s not easy, each challenge that I stick with builds my resilience, and over time I will become stronger, more resourceful, and less likely to quit.

Practical tips to consider around quitting:

Tips to consider around quitting:

Reflect: Take some time to step back and reflect on your current situation. Consider your motivations, values, goals, and the reasons that you’re contemplating quitting. Examine the potential impact it may have on your life. Evaluate whether quitting would help you focus on your main priorities, or whether it is a way of avoiding certain feelings.

Consider alternatives: Identify the problems that you are trying to solve. Before deciding to quit, explore if there are any adjustments or alternatives that could improve the situation. Brainstorm potential solutions, compromises, or changes that might address your concerns or make the situation more manageable.

Listen to your intuition: Your gut feelings often provide valuable insights. Mindfulness techniques can help quiet your mind and create space for intuitive guidance to emerge.

Trust the process: Decision-making is a process, and it’s okay to take your time. Be patient with yourself and trust that the solution will become clear. Avoid rushing into a decision out of impulsivity or external pressure.

Visualise the future with an open mind: Envision potential outcomes and how each scenario aligns with your values and goals. Pay attention to the emotions and sensations that arise during this visualisation process.

Don’t forget the basics

Practice self-compassion: Throughout this process, be kind and compassionate toward yourself. Remember that whatever decision you make, it is an opportunity for growth and learning.

Seek guidance: Reach out to a trusted friend or mentor who can provide an external perspective. Be honest about your thoughts and feelings, and be open to consider their insights. Remember that ultimately, the decision is yours to make and you are the one affected by the outcome.
